Hil.jpgDavid De Vries is an Associate Professor at the Department of Labor Studies at Tel Aviv University, Israel. He studied history at the LSE and Warwick University. A social historian, his primary research interests are modern labor and business history of Palestine and Israel. His publications include Idealism and Bureaucracy in 1920s Palestine: The Origins of ‘Red Haifa’ (1999, in Hebrew), Dock Workers: International Explorations in Labor History, 1790–1970 (2000, co-edited), and Diamonds and War: State, Capital and Labor in British-Ruled Palestine (2010). Currently he writes on Strike-Action and Nation Building: Labor Unrest in Palestine/Israel, 1899-1951.

Kwaschik_Anne.jpgAnne Kwaschik is a Junior Professor of Western European History at Freie Universität’s Center for French Studies. She was awarded the prix parlementaire franco-allemand (deutsch-französischer Parlamentspreis) by the two national parliaments, Assemblée nationale (France), and the Bundestag (Germany) for her book "In Search of the German Mentality: The Cultural Historian and Essayist Robert Minder („Auf der Suche nach der deutschen Mentalität. Der Kulturhistoriker und Essayist Robert Minder“)". She studied modern history, modern German literature, and philosophy in Zurich and Berlin. She earned her doctorate in 2006 from Freie Universität. After working as a research assistant at the Technical University of Berlin and Freie Universität Berlin, she later worked in Paris as an associate researcher at the Centre national de la recherche scientifique and as a DAAD lecturer at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences sociales/Centre interdisciplinaire d’études et de recherches allemandes. In the fall of 2009 she accepted an appointment as a junior professor at Freie Universität.

currently holds a Ph.D. in Modern and Contemporary History from the University of Zaragoza, Spain. His dissertation is entitled "La guerra continuá. Voluntarios españoles al servicio de la Francia Libre. 1940-1945)". While in residence at the Remarque Institute, he will be analyzing the International Brigadiers' history after the Spanish Civil War.

currently holds a Ph.D. in History from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. Her research project while in residence at the Remarque Institute will be entitled "Using and Abusing Public History: The Case of the Greek Economic Crisis and the Rise of the Golden Dawn."


New York University Doctoral Fellows


London.jpgShannon McHugh is a Ph.D. candidate in Italian Studies. Her dissertation on early modern lyric poetry is the first to examine male and female voices dialectically, asking how writers of both sexes enacted and questioned gender. Her publications include articles on Lucrezia Marinella and Renaissance epic, Vittoria Colonna, and Counter-Reformation religious reform. She is editor and translator with Danielle Callegari of Diodata Malvasia, Writings on the Sisters of San Luca and their Miraculous Madonna(forthcoming 2014), for the University of Toronto Press’s Other Voice in Early Modern Europe series. With Francesca Gabrielli and Melissa Swain, for the same series, she is translating the prose and poetry of three Italophone Croatian writers. She is a recipient of the Jacob K. Javits Fellowship.

KZ.jpgKimberly Ziegler is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Italian Studies at New York University. She is currently writing her dissertation, which uses oral history and urban studies to reconstruct the story of Project Chance, an experimental school for marginalized youth in Naples, Italy. Her research interests include critical spatial theory, oral history, and pedagogy, as well as 20th century Italian literature and film. Her M.A. thesis at NYU examined the Neapolitan Futurist Francesco Cangiullo’s words-in-freedom poem Piedigrotta and its portrayal of the famous music festival as a mixture of popular and avant-garde culture. Prior to NYU, Kimberly spent one year in Naples as a Fulbright Graduate Research Fellow, studying and participating in local schools’ “Schools Adopt a Monument” project.

tumblr_mt7u7lxioH1sxu14bo1_r4_1280.jpgMarina Seretti is a Ph.D. Candidate at Paris IV-Sorbonne /École Normale Supérieure, Paris. She will be completing her dissertation entitled "Images and Theories of Sleep during the Renaissance."
Her research deals with both literal and figurative sense of the notion of sleep, in theology, philosophy, physiology, art and social representations of that time.
