The Remarque Institute in Paris at the Department of History (ENS)
In September 2007, the Remarque Institute opened
a branch in France at the Ėcole
Normale Supérieure [ENS] to carry on the mission of the Remarque Institute in New York, bringing
together young academics and non-academics to discuss contemporary issues in
scholarship and public policy. The Paris-based Remarque Institute organizes and
supports programming for the study of the Mediterranean and contemporary Europe
in collaboration with the Department of History at ENS, where it also
contributes to the European Doctorate in the Social History of the
Mediterranean and Europe, within the framework
of the Curie Programme of the European Commission.
The director of the Remarque Institute in Paris is Katherine Fleming, Professor of History at NYU. Jair Kessler, the Assistant Director of the Remarque Institute, and Zvi Ben-Dor, Professor of the History of Islam at NYU, are also attached to the Remarque Institute in Paris.
As part of the partnership with
Remarque, ENS doctoral students and researchers are frequent visitors to Washington Square.
NYU faculty and graduate students are in turn encouraged to visit Remarque at ENS,
and to participate in our seminars and conferences. They should contact Jair
Kessler for further information.
